Going back....
Maria Robinson
We used to play for a lot of years, but quit about 2 years ago due to household drama.
Then one day, Sabine came upon a photo of herself at an event. She was all adorable in her garb and red curls and hanging onto her Daddy's boffer axe. She knew it was herself, but had no idea what she was doing or why she was wearing those clothes.
We realized that she had no memory of the camping, the tourneys, the singing and storytelling.... She had no concept of the term "hold!" or biffies. Two years is a lot when you've only been around for 4! It is a travesty.
We miss it too. Ok, maybe not the biffies.
So, we're going back. Somehow, we got really busy in the meantime, so it's only going to be one event this summer, but if it all works out- meaning a distinct lack of drama, then we plan on going back to our regular schedule of 5-6 events a summer. Now, for anyone who knows me- when I am into a hobby, I am really into the hobby- so I've immersed myself in research and garb designs and linen and lots and lots of patterns and toiles lately. Lots and lots of patterns and toiles. The Hubs- yeah, he's not very happy with all the fabric scraps all over his game room floor. But he benefits too. Granted, he already has a whole weekend's worth of garb, so he's on the bottom of the list- but he'll get lots more after I've caught Sabine and myself up. Apparently I got rid of a lot of my garb, and of course, she grew out of all hers.
Anyway.
Apparently when we quit, there was a whole contingent of people who stopped ever going to events as well. My brother and sister were both really excited to hear that we would be eventing again, and of course my sister handed over her wardrobe immediately for me to get started fixing and updating for her.
I am amazed at the amazing amount of information that has flooded the internet in the past three years! When we played before, there were only a couple sites- Stefen's Florilegium and Red Dawn and a few others to aid in research on the internet. It used to be a information desert when in came to medieval studies. It is incredible to me - now you can google "medieval... anything" and tons of links pop up. They're not all good, mind you, but there are plenty that are- and several that are really really good. There's even patterns! Really nice and well-researched patterns- well at least the pictures are nice. There used to only be a few that were of questionable quality.
Anyway.
So here we go- A Muse Travels Through Time. It's going to be awesome. This blog is going to document our playing. I want to show how easy it is to make garb with a bunch of tutorials that you won't find elsewhere. I want to show the struggles and triumphs of making a more period encampment and garb on a budget. I want to talk about basic garb making goals for newbies and oldies. I'd like to talk about how to make stuff that fits in your car (and allows your whole family to ride along as well). And I'd like to discuss how to entertain kids at events without ruining your fun.
So, stick around. I hope you'll find something you like. (Like me on Facebook or Follow Me on Twitter and you'll get the blog updates too.)
Oh! And did I mention that I already started a section in the bookmarks for SCA links? Cuz I did. You can check it out here.
