Gathering is an important skill to know in sewing. BUT. It can be tedious, especially when working with lots of fabric. I’ve rounded up some awesome posts with tutorials and tips on gathering.
Prudent Baby shows us the classic method, or “right way” to gather fabric with a sewing machine.
Of course, gathering was done before there were sewing machines as well! MADE shows us two ways to gather fabric– the first being the old-fashioned method and the second, a method I’ve never seen before. It sounds intriguing though, so I might have to try it.
Another method that I’ve read about, but never tried is this: zig zag over a length of dental floss to create gathers. Threads Magazine shares this tutorial. You can also use some thin crochet thread if you don’t have floss.
If you have a serger, gathering is a cinch. Check out this tutorial from the Seasoned Homemaker. I’ve found that the tighter my needle tension is, the tighter the ruffles.
Which is your favorite method for gathering? Or do you know of another technique? I’d love to hear about it!
