Ah, the glorious days of summer….
I do love painting and doing art projects out of doors! I bought these sweet little mushroom houses from Clickity Clack (no affiliation, I just love them!) on etsy a really long time ago. My intent was to paint them up and give them as gifts to my kids. I also had a bunch of wooden animals and some stackers. They’re all unfinished and ready to be painted, but I guess I was just waiting… for something.
So one day when I was cleaning up the studio and came across them again, Lil’Miss saw them too and asked if we could paint them. So I said sure. We took them outside with our watercolors and made them into lovely little mushroom houses.
Even Little Mister helped. He had his own paint set, but he seemed happy enough painting with water.
Watercolors work great for the unfinished wood. It does take an extra coat to get them nice and bright, but they dry fast and they’re easy to finish with a non-toxic beeswax mixture.
I painted the rainbow stacker.
Lil’Miss created a little village as soon as they were dry.
Next we will use a mixture of 1 part olive oil to 5 parts beeswax (melt together and then let cool completely), rubbed onto each piece with a cloth to seal them and keep the colors nice and bright. This is a great completely safe way to decorate kids wooden toys.
(Although please note that artist quality watercolors may not be non-toxic!)
What crafty things are you doing this summer?
