So I took some time out and searched for another spine. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0794526888\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=0794526888&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=artist05-20\">Usborne Encyclopedia of World History<\/a> is a great factual reference book that&#8217;s really easy for kids to read and learn from. It&#8217;s also really entertaining for adults because of the way its laid out. Of course I had to create a curriculum based on it and post all the links I could find!<\/p>\n<h3>The Encyclopedia and Curriculum Spine<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0794526888\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=0794526888&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=artist05-20\">Usborne Encyclopedia of World History<\/a> has four sections. We&#8217;re going to start year 1 in this post with the Ancient World, which is the second section in the encyclopedia. We are going to dip into the first section, Prehistory, for just a little bit to give an introduction.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve tried to fit in all the parts that seem important to know about. Remember that when you do this year again, you can expand on concepts and do different activities. We&#8217;re doing the first grade year right now, so it&#8217;s more important to get an introduction to the different cultures and time periods than to learn about every detail. This year is meant to be repeated in 5th grade and then again in 9th grade, but expanded and with added complexity.<\/p>\n<p><!-- For grades 5-8 and 9-12 read my thoughts on Expanding and Varying the Lesson Plans.--><\/p>\n<h3>How To Use This List &#038; Book<\/h3>\n<p>Much like my <a href=\"https:\/\/museofthemorning.com\/museblog\/2013\/the-ultimate-guide-to-resources-and-activities-for-story-of-the-world-vol-1\/\">Ultimate List of SOTW Activities<\/a>, this compilation is a giant list of activities, readings and printables that correlate to each section of the Usborne Encyclopedia. In general, each section has a whole bunch of one or two page spreads detailing a topic chronologically throughout history. I&#8217;ve taken these spreads and divided them into a 36 week curriculum. For the most part, this works for us. Occasionally we run into a concept or time period that takes us longer- and in that case, we&#8217;ll just spend as much time as we like on a topic. For the most part though, this system seems to allot the right amount of time to each section. Feel free to do whatever you need to make it work for you.<\/p>\n<p> Here&#8217;s the way we use the list and book:<br \/>\nIn Preparation<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>borrow books from the library on this week&#8217;s topic<\/li>\n<li>  look ahead and print out anything that&#8217;s necessary<\/li>\n<li>  make sure links are still working for interactives!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Monday<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> read a two page spread from the book<\/li>\n<li>  write a <a href=\"https:\/\/museofthemorning.com\/museblog\/2013\/free-basic-notebooking-pages\/\">notebooking page<\/a> about what was learned<\/li>\n<li>  locate the area on a map. Connect to a world map and compare to your location<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tuesday<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>do a related online interactive, art or craft activity<\/li>\n<li>  read some living story books<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wednesday<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>read a related article or reading, possibly on a related concept &#8211; or read another spread if there are two this week<\/li>\n<li>  write a notebooking page about what was learned<\/li>\n<li>  mark the spot in history on your timeline<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thursday<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>do a related activity to Wednesday&#8217;s reading<\/li>\n<li>  read some more living story books<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Free. It&#8217;s All Free<\/h3>\n<p>The thing is, the internet is an amazing resource and there is soooo much out there. I didn&#8217;t even come close to exhausting resources. And yes, they are all free because knowledge should be free!<\/p>\n<h3>Resources for All Year<\/h3>\n<p>ONLINE LINKS: So the other cool thing about this encyclopedia, is that for a lot of the spreads, there is a linked website that the kiddo can go check out. You can find all the sites listed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usborne.com\/quicklinks\/eng\/catalogue\/catalogue.aspx?cat=1&#038;loc=usa&#038;area=H&#038;subcat=HE&#038;id=3922\">here<\/a> on the Usborne website.<\/p>\n<p>TIMELINE OPTIONS: To do a chronological history, you might want to have a timeline. There are many types. Some, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guesthollow.com\/homeschool\/history\/timeline.html\">this one from Guest Hollow<\/a> go in a binder. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tendingourlordsgarden.blogspot.com\/2012\/05\/story-of-world-timeline-cards.html\">This page<\/a> has a wall timeline that you print out and have a long skinny line that can go around a room or just in rows on a wall. <\/p>\n<p>Another type of timeline is this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.halfahundredacrewood.com\/2012\/09\/an-accordion-timeline-notebook.html\">accordian folded timeline<\/a>. You can fold it into a binder or you can hang it on the wall.<\/p>\n<p>That same site from above has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.halfahundredacrewood.com\/2013\/08\/our-timeline-wall-what-we-learned.html\">this crazy whole wall timeline<\/a> made from wood slats. Having that much space would be awesome!<\/p>\n<p>TIMELINE CARDS: Toward the bottom of <a href=\"http:\/\/tendingourlordsgarden.blogspot.com\/2012\/05\/story-of-world-timeline-cards.html\">this page<\/a> find a link to some timeline cards. I printed them out half size to fit on our timeline.<\/p>\n<p>TIMELINE CARDS &#038; MORE: <a href=\"http:\/\/groups.yahoo.com\/group\/Hannah_hs_helps\/\">Hannah&#8217;s Homeschool Helps<\/a> is a fantastic yahoo group that has tons and tons of resources, specifically for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00CHY03Z4\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00CHY03Z4&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=artist05-20\">Story of the World<\/a>, but can totally be used for this also. There are timeline cards too.<\/p>\n<h2>Week 1: History &#038; Archaeology<\/h2>\n<p>CONCEPTS: what is history? maps, archaeology,<\/p>\n<p>READ ONLINE: <a href=\"http:\/\/idahoptv.org\/dialogue4kids\/season7\/archaeology\/facts.cfm\">What is Archaeology?<\/a> <a\/href=\"http:\/\/archaeology.mrdonn.org\/\">Learn some specifics about archaeology<\/a> and about some <a href=\"http:\/\/archaeology.mrdonn.org\/archaeologists.html\">famous archaeologists<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>SORTING: explore how different items have changed over time with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montessoritidbits.com\/2012\/09\/changes-over-time-history-activity.html\">these printable cards<\/a> showing a telephone, cars and people<\/p>\n<p>WRITING: <a href=\"http:\/\/walnuthillhomeschool.blogspot.com\/2011\/09\/story-of-world-sotw-introduction.html\">Make a family timeline<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>WRITING: <a href=\"https:\/\/museofthemorning.com\/museblog\/2014\/make-a-personal-timeline-pull-out-book\/\">Make a personal pull out timeline.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>POETRY: <a href=\"http:\/\/teachers.net\/gazette\/DEC02\/continents.html\">Here<\/a> are a bunch of poems about the continents <\/p>\n<p>ART: Read a selection from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0395284252\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=0395284252&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=artist05-20\">Motel of the Mysteries<\/a> (the best pages to read IMO are 22-33 and then starting on page 52, it goes through the treasures that were found). Have your child draw a common everyday object and come up with an incorrect interpretation of it. Alternative- offer a selection of photos of everyday items to choose from. Of course if there was a dig near you, go see it if you can.<\/p>\n<p>SCIENCE: <a href=\"http:\/\/satorismiles.com\/2009\/05\/07\/mount-maddie-archaeology-dig\/\">Do an archaeology dig<\/a> to find artifacts.  <\/p>\n<p>SCIENCE: Are you in an area where you can go look for arrowheads? The best time is in the spring near the rivers after the winter flooding has receded.
