Ok, I admit it, I’m just in love with little mustaches on everything! That and googly eyes. This is an idea that I’ve had floating around for a long time. If you don’t love the idea of the mustache applique, feel free to embroider anything you like on this jar cozy!
Speaking of cozy – do you call these cozies? Or koozies? Or coozie? It seems like there are lots of names for super cute things that wrap around jars or mugs to keep you from burning or freezing your hands, depending on what’s inside!

I think this button holding the back side together is so adorable!! It also makes it adjustable for almost any size jar, or even a large mug.

Alright- ready to get started? Here’s what you’ll need:
– 1 9x12inch sheet of wool felt in whatever color you want
– a small piece of Sulky Water Soluble Interfacing
– 1 scrap of black wool felt
– a scrap of freezer paper
– 1 length of 1/8 inch flat braided elastic – about 4 inches
– 1 button – about 1 inch in diameter
– black embroidery floss
– embroidery floss that matches the wool felt for the cozy
– print out the pattern onto a regular sheet of paper – download the pattern here!

First, cut out 2 rectangles from the large sheet of felt. The rectangles should be 9.75 inches x 3.25 inches. You can also cut out the rectangle on the pattern sheet to use as a guide.
Next, trace the mustache shape onto a scrap of freezer paper and iron it onto the scrap of black felt. Use medium heat with no steam.

Trace the words onto a small piece of Sulky Water Soluble interfacing. I like to use a thin sharpie to trace.
Remove the backing and adhere the Sulky to the center of one of the rectangles.

Embroider it! I used a back stitch with 3 strands of black embroidery floss. If you use a back stich or stem stitch, I think that would also look really good, but I would only use 2 strands of embroidery floss.

Wash away the Sulky by rinsing under lukewarm water until it’s completely gone. Let the felt dry completely and then iron from the backside, so the stitches don’t get squished.

On the front of the cozy, place the button and the mustache. On the other rectangle, arrange the elastic so that there’s about 1 inch of each end on the felt, with a loop hanging off. Pin the loose ends in place.

Sew the mustache on with a whip stitch, and sew the button on. Stitch the elastic on securely with matching embroidery floss. I used a running stitch, but I made sure it was really secure.

Stack the front of the cozy on top of the backside. Make sure the elastic is inside, and coming out the opposite side from the button. Pin it together.

Stitch a blanket stitch all the way around, connecting the rectangles together.

That’s it. You’re done! Wrap it around a jar and place the elastic over the button to hold it in place!

What a lovely cozy for your tea or coffee! This would also make a great gift for your favorite tea drinker- give it along with a tea strainer and a jar full of tea!
So I’m totally curious – do you call these koozies or cozies, or something else altogether?
