This is such a cute project to create a fun toy for kids- they can go in the car or anywhere and then just roll them up to put away. Stitch up a little eraser from a couple layers of flannel or sherpa and keep it all together with a some pieces of chalk and you’ve got a perfect gift or travel activity!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s get started!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supplies:<\/strong>
To make a chalkboard with a finished size of 14\u00d710.5 inches, you will need:
\u2013 chalk cloth (also called blackboard cloth)<\/a> cut to 12\u00d710.5\u2033
\u2013 a heavier fabric cut in these sizes:14.5\u00d710.5\u2033 (backing), 4\u00d74.5\u2033 (pocket), and 4\u00d710.5\u2033 (side piece)
\u2013 coordinating bias tape
\u2013 sewing machine with a zig zag stitch
\u2013 optional: ribbon or elastic to hold it closed
– chalk<\/a>
– a cloth eraser<\/a> – or make one with a couple layers of flannel<\/a> or sherpa<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n

Step 1:<\/strong>
Hem under one of the short edges of the pocket.<\/p>\n\n\n

Step 2:<\/strong>
With right sides together, layer the pocket on the edge of the chalkcloth with raw edges together. Layer the side piece on top (wth the right side facing the chalk cloth. Sew together with a 1\/2 inch seam.<\/p>\n\n\n

Step 3:<\/strong>
Flip the side piece and pocket to the front and topstitch down.

Step 4:<\/strong>
Layer the chalkcloth on top of the backing. Match up the pocket and side piece to the short edge of the backing with right sides together. Sew together with a 1\/2 inch seam.<\/p>\n\n\n

Step 5:<\/strong>
Flip so the the chalkboard is back to back and topstitch the edge. <\/p>\n\n\n

Step 6:<\/strong>
Cut the end of the bias tape in a triangle and fold over. Sew along the chalkcloth and backing, catching both layers with a wide zig zag stitch. Go slow and make sure the edge of the zig zag almost touches the open edge of the bias tape.<\/p>\n\n\n

Step 7:<\/strong>
Finish the bias tape by cutting another triangle and folding the end over.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Finished Product!<\/strong>
(I didn\u2019t have any chalk, so I am modeling crayons here)<\/p>\n\n\n

Voila!<\/strong>
Roll it up with a ribbon or sew a loop of elastic to keep it rolled up. Make a T&T sherpa or terry cloth wipe to go with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
