So, we were walking into a store one day, when this older gentleman, who was opening the door for us exclaimed how adorable Mr.Man\u2019s Truly Scrumptious pants<\/a> were. He said that he\u2019d had a pair of pants just like them when he was small. He was really excited about them and raved on for a while. It made me feel really good about these pants, even though I\u2019d never seen the vintage style that he was talking about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pattern already had a variant for putting a strip of coordinating or contrasting fabric, but this addition will make the pants even handier, and just perfect for pocketing little treasures- like you know little people like to do!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think it will really spice up those adorable little\u00a0scrumptious pants<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strip on the side is a great way to add just a little spice to some basic pants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Add a pocket and you have made these your little person\u2019s favorite pair.<\/p>\n\n\n

To make this variant to the Truly Scrumptious Pants, you will first need a copy of the pattern<\/a>. You can print it out and put it together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To complete the pattern, you will need 1-1.5 yards of fabric for the main part of the pants- I used corduroy.
You\u2019ll also need 1\/2 yard of the fabric for the strips. I used a cute cotton print.
Lastly, you\u2019ll need some 3\/8inch wide elastic and all the usual sewing increments- thread, scissors, sewing machine, etc\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All right! Ready to get started? Here we go!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember that you\u2019ll be sewing with a 3\/8inch seam allowance, unless noted for hems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cut out the pattern piece at the length you need. Also, cut down the middle lines for the strippy pants. You\u2019ll also need to cut out pattern piece C for the strip.<\/p>\n\n\n

Now, you have two main pieces for the pants- the front and the back.
With right sides of fabric together, cut 2 each of front and back pant sections as indicated by the red dotted lines on the pattern. Make sure to cut out the notches so you\u2019ll be able to tell the fronts from the backs!<\/p>\n\n\n

Cut out two of pattern piece C, the strip, with right sides together from the patterned fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n

Fold pattern piece C until it is 6 inches in length. Cut it from two pieces of the patterned fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n

Here\u2019s what you should have right now. Two pant fronts, cut with right sides together. Two strips, two smaller strips and two pant backs, also cut with right sides together.<\/p>\n\n\n

If you have a serger, serge each end of the two smaller strips. If you don\u2019t have a serger, use a zigzag stitch to finish the edges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apparently I don\u2019t have a picture of it, but also, fold over one edge about 3\/4inch toward the wrong side and stitch. This will be the TOP of the pocket and the serged edge with be the BOTTOM of the pocket.<\/p>\n\n\n

Place the pocket on top of the strip. It should be with RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER, and the BOTTOM of the pocket towards the top of the strip. Place it about 12 inches down the strip and pin in place.<\/p>\n\n\n

Stitch in place, just above the finished edge on the BOTTOM of the pocket.<\/p>\n\n\n

Flip the pocket up, so that the RIGHT side is facing out. Stitch across the bottom, about 1\/4 inch from the seam. Pin the top of the pocket in place.<\/p>\n\n\n

Sew the strip to the straight sides of the pants fronts and backs. Match the strip to the straight edge of the pant pattern with RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER from top to bottom.<\/p>\n\n\n

Once the strip is sewn between the front and the back, you should have two pants pattern pieces! I like to serge the bottom before sewing the the pants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Match them up with right sides together.<\/p>\n\n\n

Now you can follow the basic pants instructions to finish the pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stitch from the top through the curve on both the front and the back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, hem the pants, by folding the bottom edge up 3\/4inch for serged pants and 1 inch for un-serged pants. For un-serged, fold the raw edge under 1\/4 inch. Sew across the folded or serged edge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, match up the inside of the legs to each other and sew from the bottom of one leg through the crotch to the bottom of the other leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the waistband:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fold over the waist band 3\/4inch for serged pants and 1 inch for un-serged pants. For un-serged, fold the raw edge under 1\/4 inch. Sew across the folded or serged edge. Leave 1 inch open in the back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Measure the child\u2019s waist. Add 1 inch and cut 3\/8 inch elastic to at this length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Insert elastic into casing and thread through. Sew ends of elastic together, overlapping 1 inch.
Stretch waistband to settle elastic within the casing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stitch up opening in casing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there you go! Some super comfy, retro and adorable pants, with pockets for collecting all those precious treasures!!<\/p>\n\n\n
